The Cisco ASR-9902-200G-R-FC is a high-performance, compact 2RU chassis within the ASR 9000 Series Flexible Consumption Model (FCM). Designed for carrier-class edge and aggregation services, it provides up to 800G of system capacity, with a minimum starting license of 400G under the Essentials suite. This model includes a 2xRP bundle for enhanced redundancy and operational efficiency, making it ideal for service providers scaling network infrastructure incrementally.
Cisco IOS XR Software Overview
Cisco IOS XR Routing products, including the ASR-9902-200G-R-FC, are powered by the industry-leading, carrier-class, 64-bit version of Cisco IOS XR Software. Optimized for operational efficiency, utilization, and service agility under the Cisco Evolved Programmable Network, it offers features such as Pre-boot eXecution Environment (iPXE) boot, auto provisioning, native support for third-party application hosting, machine-to-machine interface, telemetry, and flexible software package delivery.
Cisco IOS XR Flexible Consumption Model
The IOS XR FCM delivers a simple, flexible consumption model allowing customers to purchase software capacity as needed. For high-density platforms like the ASR 9902, full hardware capacity is not always required from day one. This pay-as-you-grow approach enables incremental expansion matching service demand growth, investment protection through software portability across hardware, and license pooling network-wide.
Customer Value Proposition
- Reduce upfront capital with built-in pay-as-you-grow structure and deferred software payments via subscriptions.
- Utilize capital efficiently by sharing licenses across the FCM network, eliminating stranded capacity.
- Simplify operations with two streamlined software suites: Essentials and Advantage.
- Protect investments through license portability to next-generation hardware under specified conditions.
Offer Structure
The FCM comprises hardware, perpetual Right To Use (RTU) licenses, and recurring Software Innovation Access (SIA) subscriptions. RTU includes Essentials for basic routing and management, and Advantage extending with advanced features like Layer 2/3 VPNs, peering, Traffic Engineering, MACsec, SL-API, and BNG (on ASR 9000). SIA, in 3-year (36-59 months) or 5-year (60-120 months) terms, enables feature upgrades and license mobility across a Smart Account.
Cisco Smart Licensing
FCM requires Smart Licensing registration and usage reporting for compliance. Benefits include real-time visibility, centralized management, telemetry for utilization insights, flexible organization, and quick setup. My Cisco Entitlements (MCE) provides a consolidated view of assets.
Software Suites
Essentials suite supports basic transport (per-400G, 100G, or 10G capacity depending on platform). Advantage adds advanced services including all Essentials features plus Layer 2 advanced, Layer 3 VPN, peering, Traffic Engineering, MACsec, SL-API, and BNG. A-la-carte licenses cover platform-specific features like BNG on ASR 9000 or DWDM on NCS 5500. Advantage available from IOS XR 7.4.1 on relevant ASR 9000 line cards.
ASR 9000 Series Integration
The ASR-9902-200G-R-FC integrates seamlessly with ASR 9000 third-, fourth-, and fifth-generation line cards. Capacity licensing scales per 100G or 400G increments. All FCM products mandate Smart Licensing.
Warranty and Sustainability
Hardware includes a 1-year limited warranty with 10-day replacement turnaround. Cisco emphasizes environmental sustainability through material content compliance and WEEE regulations.
Services Support
Cisco Advanced Services, Software Support (required with SIA), and SP Base offer lifecycle management, from deployment to optimization, enhancing efficiency for ASR 9000 deployments.
