Overview

The Cisco FLASR1-IOSRED-RTU is the Software Redundancy Right-To-Use (RTU) Feature License specifically designed for the Cisco ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers. This honor-based license activates software redundancy capabilities, enabling redundant instances of Cisco IOS XE Software on supported models such as the ASR 1001-X, ASR 1002-X, ASR 1001-HX, ASR 1002-HX, and ASR 1004. It enhances high availability by combining redundant hardware with modular software to contain faults and prevent system-wide failures, delivering up to 99.999-percent availability.

Product Overview

Cisco ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers provide a Software Defined WAN platform that aggregates multiple WAN connections and network services including encryption and traffic management, forwarding them across WAN connections at line speeds from 2.5 to 200 Gbps. The routers feature both hardware and software redundancy in an industry-leading high-availability design. The latest additions include the Cisco ASR 1002-HX Router supporting up to 100 Gbps in a 2RU form factor and the Cisco ASR 1001-HX Router supporting 60 Gbps in a 1RU form factor. The Cisco ASR 1000 Series Route Processor 3 offers higher performance, memory, and storage options.

The series supports Cisco IOS XE Software, a modular operating system with feature velocity and resiliency. Embedded Services Processors (ESPs) based on Cisco Flow Processor technology accelerate advanced features like crypto-based security, NAT, Zone-Based Firewall, Deep Packet Inspection, Unified Border Element, and Data-Center-Interconnect without additional hardware.

Cisco ASR 1000 Series routers are ideal for enterprise data center edges, large offices connecting to WAN, and service provider Points of Presence. They consolidate traffic from mobility, cloud, video, and collaboration, applying traffic management and redundancy for consistent performance.

Key Features and Benefits

Cisco ASR 1000 Series Use Cases

For enterprises: WAN edge with Modular QoS CLI policies on VLANs or tunnels, limiting low-priority traffic; multiservice IPsec VPN aggregation up to 78 Gbps encryption; embedded high-speed firewall with Zone-Based Policy Firewall up to 200 Gbps; managed CPE for branch offices with software redundancy; high-performance SD-WAN aggregation headend supporting 8,000 IPSec tunnels.

For service providers: Broadband L2TP LAC/LNS up to 64,000 subscribers; Layer 3 VPN provider edge scaling to 4 million routes; high-end route reflector up to 29 million IPv4 routes; next-generation voice/multimedia with Cisco Unified Border Element supporting 16,000 calls and 200 Gbps multimedia.

Software Licensing

The FLASR1-IOSRED-RTU license is a Right-To-Use (RTU) feature license for software redundancy. ASR 1000 requires one of five IOS XE Universal images and one of three technology packages: IP Base, Advanced IP Services, or Advanced Services. Cisco DNA Advantage and Premier subscriptions provide unified licensing across WAN portfolio. Cisco Smart Licensing offers flexible management without PAKs. Cisco ONE Software provides flexible models for WAN with Foundation and Collaboration options.

A valid ThousandEyes agent license is required for integration, with minimum 8 GB DRAM and 8 GB storage on eligible routers.

High Availability Details

Redundant hardware on ASR 1006, 1006-X, 1009-X, 1013 with dual route processors and ESPs. Software redundancy on ASR 1001-X, 1002-X, 1001-HX, 1002-HX, ASR1004. Stateful redundancy pairs routers for backup, ISSU allows upgrades without downtime, Sub-package Mode upgrades individual components quickly. Redundancy across routers offers five-nines availability.

SD-WAN and Security Integration

Cisco SD-WAN on ASR 1000 provides secure DIA with application-aware firewall and Umbrella DNS enforcement, managed via single vManage interface. ThousandEyes integration lowers MTTI with granular visibility into underlay, overlay, and SaaS apps.

Features and Benefits
High availability - Redundant hardware components and power suppliesThese components provide system and business continuity. The ASR 1006, ASR 1006-X, ASR 1009-X, and ASR 1013 have redundant route processors and ESPs. The ASR 1001-X, ASR 1002-X, ASR 1001-HX, ASR 1002-HX, and ASR1004 have redundant instances of Cisco IOS XE Software.
Stateful intrachassis redundancyRedundant hardware combined with modular software contains faults to prevent system wide failure. Redundancy across routers is enabled by pairing routers that act as backup for each other. The routers offer 99.999-percent availability for consistent, high-performance user application experiences.
In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) supportYou don’t need to schedule downtime windows; changes are made while the system keeps on working, with nonstop routing availability.
Cisco IOS XE Software Sub-package ModeYou can upgrade individual software components in less time.
Scalable capacity and throughput - Cisco Flow Processor-based platformAdvanced services can operate at high speeds without the need for additional hardware or blades.
Hardware accelerationFeatures such as Quality of Service (QoS), cryptography, and Access Control Lists (ACLs) are processed in hardware.
Control- and forwarding-plane separationYou can scale control and data planes independently of each other.
Investment protection - Software modularityYou can mix and match the services that best meet your business needs; you won’t waste investments on capabilities you don’t need.
Pay-as-you-grow licensing with -X modelsWhen you need greater throughput, you simply activate it with a change in software license, rather than having to expend capital for additional hardware.
Cisco Shared Port Adapters (SPAs)You can reuse your investment in network I/O across platforms.
Cisco Network Interface Modules (NIMs)You can reuse your investment in network I/O across platforms.
Enterprise Applications
Deployment scenario - WAN edgeGuarantee high-priority applications by creating a virtual glass ceiling for lower-priority applications. Improve user experiences. Applies Modular QoS CLI (MQC) policies on VLANs or tunnels. Limits an arbitrary collection of low-priority traffic to a certain bandwidth. Classifies based on Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP), Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR), and Cisco IOS FPM into numerous hierarchies.
System characteristics - WAN edgeImplements flexible hierarchies. Supports 464,000 queues. Allows all queues to have a minimum, maximum, and excess bandwidth with priority propagation.
Deployment scenario - Multiservice, scalable, and secure headendIP Security (IPsec) VPN aggregation scales to meet the new bandwidth demands of service provider IP VPNs. Reduces CapEx and OpEx by migrating and consolidating to fewer Cisco ASR 1000 Series Routers. Protects investment through easy transition to much higher encryption support.
